What should I expect in first session?
Your Registered Music Therapist (RMT) will engage you in a comprehensive assessment to gather information about your lived experience, medical history, preferences and interests, and current goals for health and well-being. As part of this assessment, the RMT may utilise validated questionnaires, physical function evaluation, and other methods tailored to your needs. You will then be supported in trialling a range of music therapy interventions with the aim of developing a program that will enable you to attain your goals for health and well-being.
Do I need to know how to play a musical instrument to benefit from Music Therapy?
No! All individuals with or without musical experience can benefit from Music Therapy. Your Registered Music Therapist (RMT) will use and adapt musical activities according to your strengths and preferences.
What types of funding can I use for Music therapy services?
Music therapy services can be accessed via Home Care Packages (HCP), the Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP), and the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). Please contact your care coordinator or plan manager for more information.
What musical instruments are used in Music Therapy?
A range of tuned and untuned instruments and music technology can be used in Music Therapy sessions. Tuned instruments include acoustic guitar, ukelele, and electric keyboard. Small percussion instruments and djembe drums are untuned instruments commonly used in Music Therapy sessions. Music technology in the form of iPad applications are useful for sheet music, songwriting, or improvising on digital instruments. Geena Cheung is always keen to learn more instruments so if your instrument of choice is not listed, don’t worry, it can be incorporated!
Do I need to buy my own musical instruments?
No, your Registered Music Therapist (RMT) will provide all musical instruments. However, there are circumstances where the RMT will recommend you obtain musical instruments (e.g. for neurorehabilitation exercises) and this will be discussed with your care coordinator or plan manager with your permission.
How long are Music Therapy sessions?
Geena Cheung offers short consults of up to 30-minutes, standard consults of up to 45-minutes, and long consults of up to 75-minutes.
How often do I need to have Music Therapy sessions?
Though weekly sessions are recommended, the frequency of your Music Therapy sessions will depend on your preferences and availability of funding. This will be discussed in your initial consultation.
Do you offer Telehealth sessions?
